Preparing to read God’s Word
Prior to reading, it is important to move to a more prayerful and contemplative state of mind. A few moments of deep, regular breathing and a short prayer inviting the Holy Spirit to guide the reading time will help to set the tone and improve the effectiveness of your reading.
The reading plans are in chronological order of events and are divided into six days per week reading segments. The seventh day is for rest and contemplation on God.
- Pray. A prayer that the Holy Spirit guides you while you read.
- Read. Read the passages several times.
- Meditate. Reflect on the passages, thinking about how it might apply to one’s own life. Gravitate to any phrase or word that seems to be of particular importance.
- Respond. Respond to the passages by opening your heart to God. This is not primarily an intellectual exercise, but more one of beginning a conversation with God.
- Contemplate. Listen to God. This is a freeing oneself from one’s own thoughts, both mundane and holy. It is about hearing God talk to us. It is opening our mind, heart and soul to the influence of God. We must learn to be quiet and listen while alone with God. Through this most unfamiliar act of allowing oneself to be quiet and to listen, we will hear God speak. You’ll be amazed at what you hear from the One who deeply loves you.
- When and Where. Most people choose to read first thing in the morning, before they get started with their every day routine. Create a place in your home or apartment where you can “retreat” on a regular basis and not be disturbed. Be sure to turn off your cell phone during these times – including the vibrate mode
- How much time should it take. The time will very for each individual. Remember this is a commitment between you and God to spend time reading His Word. As is with any relationship the more time you invest in the relationship the closer, deeper and richer your relationship with God will become. So stay committed and see it through to the end.
